The Institute for the Promotion of The Less Than One Millimetre

For the first SOTW of 2001, something a bit special: a site which gives you the chance to see in one more dimension than websites normally allow…

As the title suggests, the site concentrates on creatures at the smaller end of the size-spectrum - the kinds of things we giant animals just never see. Planktonic organisms like diatoms, dinoflagellates and algae are incredibly beautiful in their own microscopic way, and with the aid a pair of 3D glasses (available from toy shops, amongst other places, or easily made from cellophane sweet wrappers - red for left eye, green or blue for right) you can see them in an even more spectacular light.

To round off the experience, as you browse through the small collection of pictures, you can read up on the natural history of the specimens in question, and in some cases follow links to find out even more.

It may be small, but this site is very, very cool. What more can a reviewer say? Dig out your glasses, sit back, and say “wow” repeatedly.
