The National Fox Welfare Society is a group dedicated to helping people to help their local foxes, and looking after the interests of foxes generally. Their website not only has details of their work, and how you can help, but is also a good place to start if you are looking for more information on one of our best-loved British carnivores.

The red fox Vulpes vulpes is a common urban garden visitor as well as country resident and, as populations spread and settle in built-up areas, more and more are injured on the roads, or are persecuted by less than entirely animal-friendly humans. The section on cruelty to foxes shows some quite graphic examples - be advised.

As well as being admired and thought of as ‘fantastic’ in some circles, foxes have quite a bad reputation in others - not only do they make a hell of a racket during the mating season, but they also kill livestock and pets from time to time. The NFWS give advice on how to reduce the slight chance of your rabbit or chickens coming to a sticky end, and information on the other problems foxes can sometimes cause - though some would argue that having your flowers dug up is a small price to pay for watching a vixen take her cubs out for a summer stroll.

A vast number of wildlife links is gathered too, giving you quick and easy access to fox ecology info, other fox species sites, and just about anything else foxy you might feel like perusing. Pretty dashed cunning.
